Köln: My First Glimpse of Western Europe
🚄 The Journey from Berlin
I hopped on the ICE train from Berlin to Cologne. Pro tip for fellow travelers: like most Deutsche Bahn (DB) journeys, many people skip the extra seat reservation fee. Just look for the small LED screens above the seats—if it’s blank, it’s all yours! 🎫💨
⛪️ A Grand Welcome: The Kölner Dom
I definitely should have stayed longer! The moment I stepped out of the station, the Cologne Cathedral hit me. Even though I knew it was right there, the sheer scale of this 13th-century masterpiece (finally finished in the 19th century!) is breathtaking. That massive, dark Gothic silhouette is enough to leave anyone in total awe. 😲⛪️🖤

🌍 A City of Expression
Cologne immediately showed its vibrant side. I walked right into a massive Iranian parade. At first glance, the colors reminded me of the Italian flag, but the Arabic script quickly clarified things. It’s clear why this city is known as the media hub of Germany—it’s full of voice and energy! 📢🇮🇷📺

The city’s openness is everywhere. I was struck by the bold, inclusive atmosphere—huge posters celebrating the LGBTQ+ community are a common and welcoming sight. 🌈🏳️🌈✨

🏘️ Small Town Vibes, Big History
Despite its importance, Cologne feels like a delicate old town. There’s a “neighborly” vibe, where it feels like everyone knows everyone. Hearing the Cathedral bells chime every hour reminded me of the ancient atmosphere in some towns in Shanxi province. It’s a beautiful mix of history and cozy living. 🔔🏡🏮

❄️ The Chill Factor
One thing to note: Cologne is surprisingly chilly! 🥶 Even though the thermometer said 10°C (much warmer than the 0°C I left in Berlin), the damp air made me shiver. Pack layers! 🧥🧣

💭 Final Thoughts
Cologne is such a lovely, compact city. I only planned for one afternoon this time, but I’ve already decided—I’m coming back for a much deeper exploration next time! 🎒👋💖
